The Zeigarnik effect is the tendency of our brain to keep unfinished tasks in our short-term memory until they're completed. David Allen's "mind like water" — a key part of his Getting Things Done methodology — is possible only once these open loops are closed.

You can use this effect to your advantage by letting your mind work through a problem even while you are not directly focusing on it.
