#9d: Leader as organisational architect.

The higher you climb in your organisation, the more you must take on the role of organisational architect. You are responsible for creating and aligning the key elements of the organisational system. Note the system comprises not only organisational structure, which is an obvious (but not always appropriate) lever for change, but also strategic direction (mission, vision, and strategy collectively), core processes, and skill bases (capabilities of key groups).

Shaping your organisation is a major way that you can — and must — scale you impact. And not only are you incentivised to do so, you are often one of the few who are able to make the right decisions at this level. As a leader, you can see the bigger picture; you understand the factors at play within the organisation and outside it.
