Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014) found that students who took hand-written lecture notes understood the content better than those who typed their notes.
A reason for this is that, by its nature, handwriting is slower and so forces you to focus on the gist.
To take note of the gist of some content, you must first understand it. This is in contrast to typed notes, where thinking about the content is obviated by your ability to copy notes verbatim.
