How you structure individual- and group-based compensation as part of your overall performance-based contribution to compensation depends on the extent of interdependence in performance.

The performance of a sales group comes from a sum of independent efforts. Here, individual performance should be rewarded.

But in a product development team, group cooperation drives performance. And so cooperation should be incentivised and rewarded with a greater percentage of performance compensation coming from group performance.
