New leaders may find themselves moving into one of the five common business situations: startup, turnaround, accelerated growth, realignment, and sustaining success. These situations are collectively known as STARS.

Each of the STARS situations have different challenges and opportunities.

Startups, turnarounds, and accelerated growth situations all require quick action. They are ready-fire-aim situations; you must make tough calls with incomplete information.

Realignment and sustaining success situations, in contrast, are ready-aim-fire; you can and must assess the situation carefully before making changes lest you make the situation worse.
